Grapefruit Nutrition Facts: What Nutrients Are Present in Grapefruits?

While many kinds of foods carry a nutrition label, fruits and vegetables usually do not. You can find some of the same nutrition information that you would find on such a label in the list below. Keep in mind that this information is based on one whole medium grapefruit and the daily recommended intake is based on the average suggested intake for adult men and women:

  • 292 mg of potassium – 10% of your daily suggested intake
  • 4 grams of dietary fiber – 14% of your daily suggested intake
  • 26 grams of carbohydrates – 10% of your daily suggested intake
  • About 2 grams of protein – about 2% of your daily suggested intake
  • 63 mg of vitamin C – 74% of your daily suggested intake
  • 18 mg of magnesium – 4% of your daily suggested intake
  • 44 mg of calcium – 4% of your daily suggested intake

Along with the health-boosting nutrients above, a red or pink grapefruit also typically has about 16 grams of sugar.

How Many Calories Are in a Grapefruit?

Our body requires energy to function properly, and we get that energy from our food and drinks. The energy that we can get from various foods is measured in calories. The higher the calories, the more potential use you can get out of a piece of food. If you’re as big of a grapefruit fan as us, you’ve probably wondered before about how many calories are in your average grapefruit. Well, wonder no more!

On average, one red grapefruit has about 100 calories. For reference, a healthy diet for men should include about 2,500 calories per day, and a healthy diet for women should include about 2,000 calories. In other words, one grapefruit would provide about 4% of your daily calories.

What Are the Health Benefits of Grapefruit?

Alright, now we’re getting to the heart of our question: what is the nutritional value of grapefruit? Well, when you eat grapefruit, you can see all of the amazing health benefits below:

  • Boost Heart Health – By consuming grapefruit, you can help your body regulate your blood pressure and cholesterol, supporting heart health.
  • Pump Up Your Immune System – The high vitamin content in grapefruits can help you fight off colds and sickness.
  • Get Weight Loss Support – Eating half a grapefruit with meals has been shown to help people lose weight.
  • Improve Gut Health – Grapefruits are packed full of fiber that helps your gut function properly.
  • Manage Blood Sugar – Eating grapefruit can help prevent insulin resistance, and they won’t cause a blood sugar spike.

If you have high blood pressure, want to lose weight, or are looking for a healthy way to improve your immune function, consider adding grapefruit to your diet!

Who Shouldn’t Eat Grapefruit?

Grapefruits might be a healthy way for you to lower blood pressure levels, support weight loss, and boost your health, but they might not be the right snack for everyone. Before adding grapefruits to your diet, there’s one big thing you need to consider: medication interactions. Because of their nutrient content, citrus fruits like grapefruit can interact with certain heart and blood pressure medications. If you’re taking medication for your heart, be sure to talk to your doctor before adding grapefruit to your regular meals.
